A dramatic new Meghan Markle story is racing across royal social media.
According to the viral version, royal biographer Tom Bower has finally uncovered the “real reason” Meghan supposedly abandoned Archie and Lilibet in Britain and suddenly escaped back to America.
The claim sounds devastating.
A mother leaving her children.
A secret flight to California.
And one of Meghan’s fiercest critics supposedly revealing what was happening behind closed doors.
But once the headline is compared with what Bower actually said — and what has been reported about the Sussex children — the story changes dramatically.
Tom Bower Really Has Been Attacking the Sussex Comeback
There is a genuine Tom Bower story behind the headline.
Bower has repeatedly criticized Harry and Meghan’s decision to return to Britain in 2026.
Speaking about their comeback earlier this year, he described their situation using two extremely harsh words:
“Desperation and failure.”
Bower argued that Harry and Meghan’s ambitious post-royal life in California had not delivered the lasting influence they expected and suggested their renewed British presence was partly about restoring relevance.
More recently, he accused the Sussexes of trying to recreate the appearance of working royalty despite remaining private citizens.
He has also criticized King Charles for allowing them so much room to operate in Britain.
Those comments are real.
But Bower’s criticisms do not establish that Meghan abandoned her children.
Archie and Lilibet Actually Moved to Britain With Their Parents
This is the biggest factual problem with the viral storyline.
When Harry and Meghan returned to Britain in August 2026, Archie and Lilibet came with them.
Reliable reporting said the four members of the family flew from California to Britain together.
Archie and Lilibet were enrolled at British schools and began classes in September.
The Sussexes were expected to live in a private residence outside London rather than returning to an official royal home.
So the verified story is not:
Meghan left the children behind.
It is:
The entire family relocated together.
The Children Are Reportedly Doing Well
Recent reporting goes even further.
A source familiar with the family told PEOPLE that Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, have “adjusted well” to their new lives in Britain.
Harry has also publicly said the children are happy at school.
The family reportedly changed schools shortly after arriving because of concerns surrounding security and the journey to and from the original school, but the children later settled into their new routine.
That does not resemble a family in which Meghan has permanently deserted her children.
Meghan Did Temporarily Leave Britain
There is one real detail that may have helped fuel the rumor.
During the children’s October half-term holiday, Harry and Meghan temporarily left Britain with their family.
The timing coincided with explosive allegations involving Meghan’s estranged father, Thomas Markle Sr.
That caused some online accounts to claim Meghan had “escaped” Britain.
But people familiar with the situation said the family was already away when the controversy exploded and described the trip as a normal school-holiday break rather than a panic flight.
So even that departure does not support the “abandoned children” story.
Meghan Still Has Strong American Ties
Another reason the rumor sounds believable is Meghan’s continuing relationship with California.
Harry and Meghan kept their Montecito home when they moved back to Britain.
They also retained their property in Portugal.
Reports said from the beginning that their UK relocation would be for an extended period, not necessarily a permanent abandonment of America.
Meghan also continues running business projects with strong American connections.
That means travelling back to the United States for work would not automatically represent another Megxit.
And it certainly would not prove she had walked away from her children.
What Did Bower Actually Claim?
Bower’s argument is mainly about image, money and royal relevance.
He has suggested the Sussexes’ California ambitions failed to deliver everything they expected.
He has questioned whether their return to Britain is truly about reconciliation.
And he has accused them of trying to maintain the prestige of royal life while remaining outside official royal duties.
Those are his opinions.
But they are very different from claiming Meghan deserted Archie and Lilibet.
I found no reliable interview in which Bower says Meghan abandoned the children and escaped alone to America.
Harry Himself Says Family Was Central to the Return
Harry has offered a very different explanation.
In September, he said the family returned for “lots of reasons.”
He specifically spoke about Archie and Lilibet being happy at school and having the opportunity to experience life in both Britain and America.
That does not settle every question about why the Sussexes returned.
Bower clearly doubts their public explanation.
But it does show that the children are central to the family’s current plans.
The Viral Headline Goes Much Further Than the Evidence
The real story is already dramatic enough.
Harry and Meghan unexpectedly left California.
They returned to Britain after six years.
Their children entered British schools.
Tom Bower publicly argued their return represents failure rather than triumph.
And speculation continues over whether the Sussex comeback can survive.
But there is no verified evidence Meghan deserted Archie and Lilibet.
No evidence she secretly fled alone because of a hidden family crisis.
And no confirmed Tom Bower revelation establishing such a claim.
The “escape to America” story takes Bower’s genuine criticism of Meghan and attaches it to a far more dramatic accusation.
And once the two are separated, the supposed bombshell largely disappears.
